Welcome back John H. West parents and students.  I am very excited and honored to welcome you back to West for another year filled with learning, enrichment, and fun! John H. West Elementary School is committed to working together to provide a safe, positive, and supportive learning environment to ensure the academic success of ALL students. I hope you have had a restful and enjoyable summer. We have been very busy getting the building ready for our students and we are very excited to welcome them back.   I tell this to the students every year, but the truth is that it gets very lonely here at West without their bright and smiling faces, so I am just as excited as they are to begin the 2018-19 school year!  It seems like just yesterday was the last day of school in June when we played the song “See You in September,” and here we are…September.

The summer months just seem to fly by.  It has been said that people take pictures of the summer, just in case someone thought they had missed it, and to prove that it really existed.  Compared with the excitement and seemingly endless possibilities that exist in our minds each June, in a few weeks, I’m sure we will wonder if summer wasn’t actually a dream. I hope you had a chance to take at least mental pictures of your time together with your family and friends to savor some of the important moments with your family.

The staff and I recognize the important contributions parents make toward a child’s success in school. There is no question about it - success at school begins at home. Parents are the single most important variable in a child’s schooling. Parents model both a silent and spoken language in front of their children daily.  One of the most important components of a good school is the partnership between the school and parents who work together for the best interest of children. The close partnership between home and school is one of the exceptional strengths at John H. West Elementary School.

West has a strong tradition of supportive, involved parents. Throughout the year parents have the opportunity to develop that partnership in a wide variety of ways.  Parents join the PTA and are able to volunteer at various activities, read to their children, and help in many other ways such as helping with homework, helping them to stay organized and supporting them as they study. It is important to your child that you are involved in some way with their school life. It’s a way to let your child know you think his or her school is important.

Commitment to the best for our children on the part of parents, students and staff is the key to our success. It is the hope of the staff that all parents will help us fulfill this commitment to excellence on behalf of ALL children at John H. West.   School and home can work together to build skills and knowledge, reinforce values, and develop a strong sense of self-worth. We must invest our time and energies in our nation’s most valuable resource - our children.

Looking forward to a great 2018-19 school year,

Carol Muscarella, Principal
